More About Wastewater Flow Meter Applications

Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) use large heated digester tanks to remove and dispose of solid waste material. Biogas is produced when solid waste's organic matter decomposes without oxygen (anaerobic).

Biogas generally consists of about 70% methane and 30% carbon dioxide (CO2). Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas that remains in the atmosphere for approximately 9 to 15 years. As a primary constituent of natural gas, methane is a valuable energy source that can be used to power heat exchangers or boilers. Any unused gas may be flared following EPA or other greenhouse gas regulations.

Because of their wide turndown and no-moving parts design, thermal mass flow meters are commonly used to monitor biogas. Fox Thermal mass flow meters can accurately measure biogas flow rates in wastewater treatment facilities to optimize digester processes, comply with environmental regulations (40 CFR Part 98 Subpart II), and control fuel and airflow ratios in biogas combustion processes.

Monitoring Aeration Systems in Wastewater Treatment Facilities

In wastewater aeration pools, one of the most important factors for proper treatment is determining how much air volume in standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM) will be needed to deliver the mass of air required for optimal bacterial biodegradation of organic matter.

WWTPs use mass flow meters to locate and eliminate failures or inefficiencies in blowers or air compressors. They also can be used for detecting clogged diffusers and aspirated mixers.

As wastewater digester gas flow compositions change over time, flow meters must be sent back to the factory to be recalibrated. But not with the Gas-SelectX® feature, available on Fox Thermal mass flow meter models FT1, FT4A, and FT4X.

With the Gas-SelectX® feature, users can change the settings to match the new gas composition in the field without removing the flow meter from the process. Once the setting is changed, the flow meter’s NIST-standard calibration can be verified in situ using the CAL-V™calibration validation feature.

For wastewater digester gas flow meters, the FT1 and the FT4X are the most commonly used. When DC power is required, the FT1 is the best choice, and when AC power or a remote configuration is required, the FT4X is the right model
